About Us

In 1999 a group of friends and valued supporters formed Action for Greyhounds UK, with three essential aims in mind:

1. To campaign for the abolition of greyhound racing.

2. To promote greyhounds as pets.

3. And, where possible, to alleviate the suffering of greyhounds discarded by the racing industry.

Greyhound racing in the UK is responsible for the suffering and slaughter of thousands of greyhounds annually, and AFG UK believe it is the ‘business’ of greyhound racing that fosters and perpetuates the cruelty. It is for that reason we support a call for:

1. The government to pass legislation making it illegal to place or accept bets on greyhound racing.

2. The general public to not attend or bet on greyhound racing, so the industry fades away through lack of support.

Through a variety of activities that includes leafleting, street stalls and demonstrations, AFG UK highlight the plight of greyhounds everywhere, and the funds we raise help towards the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of those greyhounds most in need; the many that are unwanted, abandoned, neglected and abused. Several of our success stories are documented here.

The generosity of the public is vital to maintain the work we do (each greyhound we rescue costing on average £300) and for that reason all donations, no matter how small, are gratefully accepted. For anyone wishing to set up a standing order, a form is available to download here.

In addition, both dedicated foster and forever homes are needed for greyhounds rescued.

AFG UK is happy to provide the racing history of any greyhound adopted; the only information we need is the ear markings along with the colour and sex of the animal.
