“There will always be greyhounds mistreated and abused - that is a fact of life… But to keep bringing it up over and over again does my head in.”

Greyhounds homed independently by members of the racing fraternity are rarely (if ever) neutered. No Way Jose was no exception and across many years was allowed to have several litters. Home for the greyhound was a dilapidated caravan and when responsibility for the animals care was left with a neighbour the help of AFG was sought.

After a short period of time in foster care Belle was found a loving and forever home in June 2010.

The history of Thirsty Maiden immediately following retirement is unclear but the blue brindle female ended up at a rescue traumatised and shaking with fear. Thirsty Maiden was subsequently signed over to AFG.

After briefly being in foster care for a second time Genie was found a loving and forever home in September 2010.

Poppy is another greyhound homed by trainer Peter Debenham, un-neutered and without a home check. The new owner – a single mother working all hours – was simply not in a position to look after the greyhound properly and Poppy was signed over to AFG.

Poppy was found a loving and forever home in April 2006.

After a brief career on the track, Flax Chief was kept by his owner until 10 years old when, due to a decline in the owners health, the greyhound was signed over to AFG.

Silver Stream was given away, un-neutered, at a young age. The greyhound was perhaps looked after properly over the immediate years to follow, but later in life suffered serious neglect. When brought to the attention of AFG, Silver Stream had rotten teeth and overgrown nails, was flea ridden and emaciated.

Ben is now in permanent foster care and enjoying the love he so richly deserves.

Mamas Money never made the grade to race and in 2003 was off-loaded by trainer Irene Barnard with little regard shown for the dog’s future welfare and security. Turn the clock forward to June 2009 and the greyhound was being advertised on Freecycle. A reader, apparently concerned about what might happen to the dog, took possession of her and a few days later signed the black female over to AFG.

After nearly one year in foster care Peg was found a loving and forever home in May 2010.

It is thought Conteh was used briefly for hare coursing and retired early following the welcome and overdue Hunting Act 2004. The fawn male was subsequently to endure a chequered history before eventually being placed in the care of AFG.

After a few months in foster care Rocky was found a loving and forever home in January 2010.

Vikki came into the care of AFG in December 2008 when her young owner/trainer (who thought it would be a fun hobby to own and race greyhounds) soon realised it wasn’t and decided to no longer have any more involvement with the greyhound racing industry.

Wishing to seek his fortune abroad after securing the future welfare and security of his 3 greyhound girls, he sought the help of AFG after being very disappointed with the local rescue schemes affiliated to the industry.
After being let down by a local independent rescue who promised to take Vikki, she was signed over to the care of AFG.

After nearly a year in her wonderful foster home Vikki was homed with a rescued lurcher but after 1 year and 3 months the family’s circumstances changed and AFG had to take Vikki back.

After a short time in another foster home with 2 little rescued terriers, Vikki found her forever home May 2011 with Cathy and Michael and little rescued poodle/cross, Spike.

All is one big adventure for dear Vikki as she is such a friendly confident girl.

When Alfie was just 6 weeks old a door was accidentally closed on him and the result was a badly broken leg. It was, however, a treatable injury but with a costly operation required, followed by weeks of aftercare, breeder and owner Andy Trett was set to have the puppy destroyed. The veterinary practice that examined Alfie was unwilling to do this and he was signed over to the practice and, in turn, to AFG.

Alfie was found a loving and forever home in June 2003.

Molly came into the care of AFG 20.11.2008 (after Lulu and before Vikki -all from the same owner /trainer.

Again Molly was let down by a local independant rescue, who had promised to take her. Luckily we had a suitable foster home for Molly with a rescued Jack Russel, “Flossie”, so were able to take her into our care.

Molly quickly settled and within 2 weeks her foster home became her forever home. Janet and David fell for her and couldn’t bear to part with her, so adopted her.
Both dogs are great companions and are affectionatley known as “the Moll and the Floss”.
