BEX – (named for racing as) Becks In Time
Bex came to the attention of AFG in January 2005, and luckily a foster carer was able to pick him up to take him straight to her home.
In November 2004 Bex was handed over to a young couple stationed at R.A.F. Lakenheath in Suffolk by his racing owner Mr Jubb. He was handed over at the fiveways roundabout, near the airbase, so no home check etc was carried out by Jubb, and no measures taken to secure the future welfare and security of this young 3 year old greyhound with a short racing history – Jubb had informed the new owners that Bex was about 1 year to 18 months old and had never raced.
The couple contacted AFG in January 2005, when they grew tired of him.
It is absolutely not recommended to home any animal on to military bases, whereby people can be transferred to a base anywhere in the world at short notice, usually animals will be left behind. Jubb would obviously not have been bothered by this.
Luckily Bex spent the rest of his life full of love and respect in his foster home which became his forever home
Now R.I.P Dear Bex 10.12.2001 to 31.08.2010
Sadly, on August 31st 2010, after developing an aggressive and incurable form of bone cancer in his shoulder, his devoted carer Jean had to make the unbearable decision to let him go.
He was a wonderful gentle friendly boy who never put a foot wrong and helped settle in many of Jeans fostered hounds. He is very desperately missed by Jean and her other rescued hounds.

LANCE – (named for racing as) Bryanvale Senor
Lance came into the care of AFG January 2005. He was no longer wanted by the family who had acquired him free 1 year earlier by the owner/ breeder and trainer.
After a short time in foster care where he was neutered and inoculated, de-flead and wormed. Lance found his forever home March 2005 but was returned to us through no fault of his own after being branded a killer as he held a baby bird in his mouth, which sadly died
Happily back in foster care Lance then found a wonderful home in October 2005, sadly to be returned to us in February 2009 Lance had to be returned to us as a result of a marriage break up.
Luckily for Lance, we had a vacant foster home where lance stayed in permanent foster care never needing to be re-homed, with the company of a beautiful female greyhound “Annie”
Sadly in May 2010, Lance became ill suddenly, he had developed an aggressive tumour between his stomach and spine which had blown up in a matter of hours….Lance could not be treated, and his devoted carers Cathy and Michael had to let him go.
Throughout his time in foster care and homes Lance remained loving and loyal to all his carers and is very sadly missed.

RILEY – (named for racing as) Meenala Boss
Riley came into the care of AFG on 18.11.2011 after we were informed by another rescue that a man was trying to get rid of a greyhound a.s.a.p.
When we went to see the dog we discovered he had been acquired 5 months earlier from a rescue who we were familiar with. After contacting the rescue, it was agreed that Riley could be signed over to AFG as we had a foster home available for him.
After 2 weeks in foster care Riley found his wonderful forever home with 4 other rescue dogs and 6 cats. He was a wonderful boy who could not be faulted. We dread to think where Riley would have ended up had he not been brought to our attention and the original rescue may never have known.

BIG MILLY – (named for racing as) Turnthelightoff
Big Milly came into the care of AFG in June 2005 at 9 years of age.
We were contacted by the people who had acquired her from Peter and June Debenham’s Racing Greyhound Retirement Home (R.G.R.H.) 4 years previously. The couple had 3 young children and stated “they hadn’t got time for Milly – how much time does a 9 year old quiet gentle greyhound take up?!!!
When signed over, Milly had no veterinary records and when the couple were asked why she had not been spayed they said “The trainer, P Debenham, said ” it was not necessary” and she’d only came in season twice with a teaspoonful of blood (even more worrying). We were told Milly had pain when she arose from a lying position. A vet check showed no neurological problems but would check further when spayed.
After 1 week in foster care Milly found her forever home and after a few days settling in, she was spayed. Just in the nick of time as the vet found tumours on her ovaries and after a complicated hysterectomy, she made a full recovery.
The previous owners had never taken her to the vet and by the time she would have shown signs of discomfort, it would have been too late, luckily we got her just in time.
Milly lived a contented happy healthy life and reached the great age of 14 years

ABBY – (named for racing as) Canalside Willow
Abby came into the care of AFG in 2003 when the then owners had a new baby and couldnt cope with Abby as she was clumsy and boisterous, (although they also had another black female of the same age who was very docile).
Abby quickly settled into her foster home with Fran and Tim who had years of experience caring for unwanted racing greyhounds.
As is often the case with our foster carers, Abby’s foster home quickly became her forever home, she was soon after joined by an AFG lurcher ” Scooby”.

ZENA – (named for racing as) Purple Pixie
Zena was raced at Great Yarmouth and came into the care of AFG 03.06.2001. What a state this poor girl was in.
We had been alerted to her by neighbours of the 1 bedroom upstairs council flat she was being kept in. Reports of her screaming and howling when left alone there (for sometimes up to 14 hours) whilst the then so called carer, went out clubbing etc. There were many disturbing reports of her screaming and howling upon the owners return (possibly being beaten for soiling the flat).
An AFG rep visited the property on 2 occasions and knew the poor greyhound was inside. Needless to say, there was no sign of anyone in the property. A note was left asking about the dogs welfare and as a result we were contacted by the boyfriend who, luckily, arranged for Zena to be signed over to AFG.
